ADSL SERVICE OFFERS MORE BROADBAND CHOICES:

Source: Bizbytes; The Sunday Standard April 15, 2007

In the local broadband space where broadband consumers are bandwidth starved, yet its unimaginable what manner of choices ADSL provides.

ADSL is such kind of broadband offering. ADSL stands for Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line. It revolutionises your Internet experience by transforming your existing telephone line into a high-speed digital line capable of carrying data at up to 40 times the speed of a conventional modem. It is typically 10 times faster than a 56K modem and many times faster than the standard ISDN service or any other conventional line.

ADSL is a digital technology used over standard copper telephone and fax lines. ADSL products can operate through your standard telephone line without interrupting your use of the telephone and fax lines. ADSL products operate through your standard telephone lineswithout interrupting your use of the telephone.

ADSL uses an existing telephone voice calls and internet access to happen at the same time. It is asymmetrical, meaning that speed for downloading are different from speed for upload. Traditionally downloading (receiving) is quicker than uploading (sending). This means that with ADSL, viewing websites and receiving information will now be considerably faster.

Speed.

Locally ADSL services is available from Telkom Kenya and Kenya Data Network (KDN). ADSL services provide very generous download limits and can enable you to download data up to over two Mbps compared to the standard modem speed of 56 kbps, and upload data at speedof upto 640 kbps. for example, downloading a 10 megabyte file can take around one minute using an ASDL 1500 kbps plan, compared to up to one hour using a traditional 33k/56k modem.

Always on connection.

ADSL allows an always on connection. you need not dial-up every time you want to 'log on'. ADSL "always on" connection will support multiple and unlimited users, allowing customers to network additional users. This is an advantage over same ISP providers who only allow a certain number of users, after which you have to pay extra (per user).

Boardband means no more engaged tones, no screeching noises from your modem and no delays. When using a standard modem connection, e-mails with large file attachments and graphic intensive Web site take ages to download. Viewing video or listening to music on the Web also proves problemtic.

However ADSL broadband connection improves all of these and makes it possible to have video-conferencing, security survellance, ecommerce, remote-LAN access, and video on demand.

ADSL provides a dedicated, high-speed Internet connection over your already existing Telkom phone line. No more waiting to dail and connect, no more engaged tones! Your web browser is always ready to go and your email is always instantly available.

Many business, educational and professional internet users require high-speed access to the World Wide Web. Other need to be online regularly or constantly, but do not want to tie-up their existing telephone lines.

ADSL service is an affordable and consistent solution meaning huge phone bills will be a thing of the past. This saves time and enables businesses to operate more efficiently.

No dial up costs

With ADSL there are no dial-up costs, which reduces your phone bill. There are no annoying dropouts or redials, no busy respones and no waiting for the connection When you switch on your computer you are instantly on Internet.

The beauty of this service is that you only need to add ADSL service to an already existing analog phone line in the same way you add other services.

The upstream (from you to the imternet) speed of ADSL is less than the downstream (to you) speeds. For Internet use, this is fine, as you are typically sending a small request upstream and pulling lots of information downstream. An ADSL connection runs much faster than a modem, does not tie up your phone lone and should be charged at a fixed flat rate. Ideally, a monthly fee should cover data transfer as well as the cost of maintaining the ADSL connection.

Uptake

There has been neat uptake of their ADSL offerings, especially from consumers and SME's ADSL customer base is expectd to grow. However the service providers need to offer innovative packaged solutions to further enhance their value proposition to the market place to make their offerings even more attractive to broadband consumers.

Upgrade

Service providers can upgrade the ADSL systems to provide even higher speed offerings of ADSL2 or ADSL 2 plus (ADSL2+ as it is commonly know). This can open doors to new Video service support capabilities and a host of new providers.

ADSL2 is user-friendlier to subscriber and more profitable to carriers. It also adds new features and functionality targeted at improving performance and interoperability, and adds support for new applications and services. ADSL2+ also enables service providers to evolve their networks to support advanced services such as video in a more flexible way.
