:: National sports competition for pupils with disabilities successfully held in Meru.

The national games schools games for children with disabilities was successfuly held in Meru last week with participants in various sports disciplines.

This years games were unique in various ways with alot of the schools showing great prerparations and effort. The games are usually very effective scouting venue for the Paralympics in which Kenya is a veteran in distance athletics and basket ball.

It was great to see the potential that our school generate in the school participants various regional qualiferers. There were school records broken for several categories of the games. The competiion was very stiff especially in traditional power zones of Basket ball, football, volleyball, handball, athletics and other indoor games.

The advent of HIV/AIDS also saw the need for the use of sports to build capacity in health education. Sports persons who are role models to children with disabilities like Henry Wanyoike who is visually impaired and the paralympics team should be invited next time to grace such events to help build moral and role model the children.

The participants who were residient in the Meru school in Eastern Province for the whole week long event was also graced by various side activites including the music, the drama festival winners, health education and Deaf VCT services which also provided some video shows and drama on the need for us children with disabilities to live responsible sexual lives.

The advent of HIV/AIDS also saw the need for the use of sports to build capacity in health education. Sports persons who are role models to children with disabilities like Henry Wanyoike who is visually impaired and the paralympics team should be invited next time to grace such events to help build moral and role model the children.

It was also intructive to see the many teachers who have built the special education fratenity with patience and dedication. Such special needs educators need to be rewarded to build moral and further improve their long thankless work. Training our children with disability to be able to be world class sports people with disabilities is a task that should be more than remunerated.

The event which began on monday 10th April ended on friday 14th April and was quite successful compared to last year. The organisation this time was also very comparative. There is need for a national award system that helps the winning schools to receive recognition of some sort to build moral and competitiveness.
