Disability
is not Inability |
:: EDUCATION PROGRAMME:
Education we believe is our biggest barrier to all
other issues of life. The role of education as a source of productivity,
particiaption and healthy living is insurmountable.
We believe that its only through education that partcipation intensity
will rasie to levels that make productive and equitable access
to opportunties.
Persons with disabilities are by condition (cultural and systamic)
strategically disadvantaged to effectively participate in socio-economic
and political activities.
The Programme has one goal that drives the education activities:
ACCESS. Based on the principle of integration
of Persons with disabilities into society it is our belief that
Education for ALL principle means we must find ways of making
Education accessible within the inclusion structires that are
existing and towards a productive citizen with disabilities.
To achieve this the role of Information Communication Technology
is quite critical especially in building access both through adaptation
of existing intructional materials and methods. ICT also build
capacity to deliver materials in accessible afordable manner.
This therefore defines the ACCESS objectives
of the Education Programme in two ways:
a) To adopt materials to forms
accessible to persons and children with various disabilities.
This includes sign language, voice, video, braille etc.
b) To deliver the same instructional and suplementary
online reading materials to the learners with special needs in
a convinient manner.
c) To increase access to computer hardware. The
expansion of access to ICT in general and computer facilities
in particular is of great importance to the programme. We therefore
do alot of advocacy in this area to ensure ALL ICT programmes
are disability friendly.
a)
To adopt materials to forms accessible
The programme adapts existing materials to be disability-friendly
and therefore productively useable by persons with various especially
communication disabilities.
The focus on Deaf education is only due to the lack of instructional
materials in Kenya sign language a fact that has disenfranchised
many deaf people from productive citizenship.
b)
Convinient delivery of materials.
Using the potentials brought by ICT, the programme builds and
publishes various materials for FREE delivery directly to either
service providers or users. A internet- based delivery mechanism
is most prefered due to wide access and low distribution of computer
facilities.
c) Adopt a PWD school/institution:
The programme also works with various agencies and departments
of government to build ACCESS to ICT hardware to enable more persosn
with disabilities to get an education.
d) Education Policy Advocacy:
The programme also does alot of advocacy jointly with other stakeholders
in an effort to improve accessible education services to ALL persosn
with special needs. The adjustments are usually either misunderstood
or require resources for their successful implementation.
