Handicap International manages various disability HIV/AIDS project.
The organisation got funding from PEPFAR and has been working
with various organisations of persons with disabilities.
These include: a) Dandora Deaf Self Help Group. b) Kenya Sign
Language Research Project. c) KEDAN
the project have been successful in achieveing their objectives
for the year 2005-6 and are gearing out for the second face albeit
at a scale up.
The organisation recently organised a National Campaign on Disability
and HIV/AIDS which say various stakeholders make presentations
at policy level on various issues pertinent to disability and
HIV/AIDS at policy level. The two day even which was funded by
USAID through the AED also saw interesting contributions on various
challenges persons with disabilities face within HIV/AIDS in a
developing country like kenya.
Some of the highlights included the demand for objective research
and the lack of people with disabilities leading or advocating
for programme initiatives at various levels of government or private
sector. The challenges of adjustments the nation health system
needs to effectively manage HIV/AIDs among populations with disabilties
was well highlighted.
The two day workshop was held in Nairobi 26th to 27th of June
2007 and brought together a large representation of policy people.
The workshop emphasissed the role of empowering people on various
topical risk areas that express the face of HIV/AIDS.
