:: Trevor's Dream of 2030 Kenya

"Boy Economist Spoke His Mind"
by Daily Nation June 15th, 2007. by Bernard Namunane

Trevor Kibet

Thirteen-year-old wrote to mandarins who make Budget and envisions Kenya as a Business economy.

Why i wrote letter to Kimunya.

Elite schools in Kenya, it appears, are moulding intelligent Kenyans who would steer the country to higher economic growth rates.

In fact, if we are to Trust Finance minister Amos Kimunya, the patriotism with which they present their proposals on how the country's economy could grow seems overwhelming.

Mr. Kimunya, who was presenting his second Budget aimed at turning the economic gains of the NARC Government into sustainable prosperity, reffered tp Trevor Kibet Langat, 13, of Brook House School in his end notes speech.

The young economist was deliberately seated in the Speaker's gallary - preserved for dignitaries, parastatal chiefs and envoys. Posing as one who has waded through volumes pf Economic, Master Kibet was quoted to have written to the Budget-making Mandarins.

"I have been watching the economy grow from 0.3 percent to 6 percent. But sometimes I ask myself why Kenya can't be like Singapore or South Africa. I went for Young People's Conference in february and i was amazed by the infrustructure. Is Kenyaever going to build such roads (as in south Africa)? Kenya has the potential to become a world class economy. I watched CNBC (Cable Netwrok Business Channel). When i am of age, I will create a business Channel that will engage politicians to talk about business and economic activities of the people of Kenya" He said.

He went on: "I think it is time that we have proffessional political leaders. We could make Kenya not only a huge economic country but also a business centre. Kenya will at one time be a huge and I will support the government, but I will not just simply talk how bad or good the government is, I will take action and build Kenya even in the smallest way possible. I think it is time for me to take action and it is also time for Kenyans to take actions. I have taken the risks to write to you, I believe the biggets risk is not to take a risk."
