:: ADJUSTMENTS
An adjustment is a deliberate change in the architecture
of a service/facility to enable access by person with a limitation
that may otherwise significantly deny functional access.
The government and society encourages voluntary adjustments
and the government even gives incentives for services
and facilities to be adjusted to enable access by persons with
various limitations.
Adjustments come in various shapes and categories. Adjustments
are mainly categoriesed according to disability needs and according
to facility or service.
There are two types of adjustments:
a) Voluntary Adjustments and b) ordered
adjustments.
A voluntary adjustment is like the sarova panafric one
and can be induced either by and opportunity/incentive or an event.
The current push is for adjustment orders to be voluntary. The
government and disability community also gives incentives to various
service providers or
The NCPWD
has the power to order an adjustment to make a facility or service
disability friendly. Such an order is structured and is also negotiative
with opportunites for a grieved party to represent its case and
appeal
should they feel discriminated upon.
The implementation of the provision is still in limbo but the
section related to adjustment orders is quite clear and specific.
The provision also assumes that there is no need for an
adjustment order againt a
government institution
since the government it is assumed will always and ONLY adjust
on a voluntary basis and subject to availability of resources.
There are various inducements to encourage voluntary adjustments
provided both by the government and the disability sector private
or civil society.
