::ADOPT A DIGITAL SCHOOL FOR PWDs
IN KENYA
Developing a Sustainable Knowledge Economy
Introduction
The ICT sector continues to support Kenya's socio-economic
development through the provision of essential services. The Government
is implementing sound and responsive ICT sector regulatory policies
to enhance the socio-economic impact of the sector and to enable
it to contribute more effectively to the development process.
In order to transform Kenya into a Knowledge economy, the Government
of Kenya is developing infrastructure to enable the full utilization
of information resources for maximum developmental impact.
The Government therefore encourages the participation of schools
in the constructive use of this infrastructure to establish "Digital
Schoos" which will play a key role in preparing Kenya's future
workforce for the envisaged transformation to a digital economy.
What is a Digital School?
The National ICT Policy recognizes schools and other institutions
capable of providing e-education and e-learning as principal partners
in the delivery of the Government of Kenya's overarching policy
objective of a prosperous ICT driven society with widely accessible
and effordable ICT products and services to persons with disabilities.
Digital Schools will be equipped with computers and electronic
accessories capable of providing students with disabilities with
online services. They will be points of internet access to educational,
research and other online content like the e-books
programme that will enable the creation of Kenya's
knowledge economy workforce.
The Digital Schools project, invites Kenyans and international
partners from all walks of life to partner with us by donating
computers to rural and disadvantaged city schools
for children with disabilities and help our country
reduce the digital divide. Fiscal incentives will be offered to
partnering donors.
How do l Adopt?
Simply identify a school for children with
disabilities of your choice any where in the Republic
and donate a computer or computers. You can purchase it/them directly
from the vendors or through the subsidized Madaraka PC Project.
This way you will be helping to create Digital Schools in Kenya
and thereby help to transform Kenya into a knowledge Economy.
How does the Economy Benefit?
Digital Schools will increase access to ICT products and services
as well as knowledge in their use, thus contributing to making
Kenyans with disabilities knowledge citizens. It will also increase
computers per capita and through the "Jipp Curve Effect"
(which demonstrates a direct co-relationship between info-density
and GDP growth), positively impact the economy. The economy will
also register direct growth from increase corporate or individual
social responsibility from those donating towards the Digaital
Schools.
PWDs graduating from digital schools will also partcipate more
effectively in economic activities and be productive citizens
like any other.
So What, Where and How?
So let us either as individual Kenyans, here or in the Diaspora,
come together in the spirit of patriotism, in partnership with
Corporate entities in our beloved country so that we collectively
exercise our social responsibilities, knowing well the developmental
impact of ICTs and the benefits it will bring to our people, in
taking the Grand March to a Knowledge Economy by donating computers
and creating Digital Schools for children with disabilities all
over Kenya.
