::Adventitiously
Deafblind.
These people are born with normal vision and hearing
but lter loose some or all of these senses due to accident or
illness or aging. They usually have their speech in tact, but
receptive communication is a challenge.
Hearing aids and also eyeglasses, magnifiers and other visual
aids may help but will usually need to be supported by finger
or block spelling. The biggest challenge for the adventitiously
deafblind person and the professionals is to reconstruct a self-image,
which can carry the deafblind person through to a different life
with new skills acquired for most daily activities.
