:: The Disability Advocacy
The visibility of the disability community is essential for the
community to be accepted as a part and parcel of Kenya society
with the necessari citizenship rights and responsibilities.
There is a tendency in most societies either ignore or assume
the disability community as lesser citizens who can only be represented
but have no self generated rights. Many people therefore make
decisions based on attitudes assumed or built from cultural misconceptions.
The need for awareness on the potentials within disability is
quite important in ensuring the community's values are appreciated
and included in the national product definition and distribution.
This requires widespread advocacy on the achievements, limitations,
challenges, and potentials and adjustments required to enable
equal partcipation for the community.
The need for empowerment of this community therefore becomes necessary.
Empowerment is a two way process. empowerment of the community
and empowerment of the wider society to build disability-intelligence.
The need for rumps or lifts when building housing, The need for
signs that communicate also to people with hearing impairments;
the need for braille signs in buildings; the need for sign language
skilled personnel in various social facilities; these are examples
of disability intelligence that many developing society including
Kenya lack.
To build social disability intelligence, the role of the community
in showcasing its abilities, limitations, challenges, and potentials
cannot be overemphasised.
The programme targets to achive this through various inclusion
or visibility projects:
:: Visibility Projects:
:: A Talk Shows on Disability
:: TV commercials
like Disability AIDS Video with the First Lady.
:: Adoption of national campign publicity Materials Like
"I am Proud to be Kenyan" in sign language.
