Lessons can be learnt from other sources(29)
that can help develop affordable interventions that empower the
disability community.
Implementation of the persons with disability
ACT needs to learn from the implementation of the children’s
ACT(30).
We should empower more local, provincial and national organizations
to participate in the identification, implementation monitoring
and evaluation of the disability ACT. This requires that they
are aware of what they we can do differently, what we can view
differently and the legal implications of certain negative actions.
| There is need for more debate
on the benefits, ways of inclusions and mainstreaming disability.
People with disabilities need to lead this debate(31).
We need to increase visibility of positive disability imagery
into our social psyche. This would effectively integrate the
disability agenda into constituency, political party and national
social and political discourse. While a national campaign
on electronic and print media would be ideal, a calendar would
be a perfect start. We need to change mainstream media’s
perception on disability with or without statutory self regulation(32).

A Calendar Media is one method that would effectively
do this within our daily social environments as we relate debate
and adjust disability-friendly environment. A calendar is a material
used on a daily basis and equally a powerful advertising feature
in various setting. It targets a diverse audience yet it can also
be used in a workshop, a seminar or a learning institutions. It
would grace the walls of a hospital, clinic or a CBO as much as
an NGO, a government ministry or a chief’s office as easily
as church offices as equally as a large multinational company
where we seek work.
Identification, monitoring and evaluation of the
many organizations who were able to lobby the government, media
and community need to be mobilized to ensure effective support
from ourselves, family, community, institutions, the mainstream
media, politicians and religious community to achieve the fullness
of life possible even when living with impairment.
