Deaf Self Help World AIDS & International Disability day Celebrations
4th December 2006.
World Aids day special happenned in Dandora face four.
Sponsored by the Standard Charterted Bank, Dandora Deaf Self Help
group organised over 200 deaf people to a series of events on
December 1st 2006. Much can be said about the organisation and
the coordination between the various sections and departments
but the event at least the first day was a success.
The 3 day event saw presentations from Standard Bank in various
areas including Herbal medicine, which happened to provide basic
information on locally available ways to stay healthy. There we
quite interesting drama from the Behaviour Change group from Machakos.
Their drama if you were able to understand either in sign Language
or through an interpreter was quite informative.
Apart from issues in deaf crowd management challenges that the
Master of Ceremonies had and the issue with cordination of Interpreters
all went well.

The Deaf officals in the organisation were quite active.
There is need for more of these peer educators to be trained specifically
on some of the skills. This would be helpful in providing more
sustainable support for the Deaf living with AIDS.
During the second Day that is saturday the population of deaf
peole attending increased considerably with more who work or are
engaged elsewhere coming for the event. this is good because when
more deaf peole get to know about some thing there is wider discusion
and debate. I was impressed for example how the issues of treatment
using water was widely debated. Many were not aware that water
had so much preventitive and curative abilities. I learnt alot
myself.
The fruits and their impact on body health. The improtance of
eating well weather Positve or not. The issues that only people
who are positive need to eat well was dispensed with at least
amung the few who i spoke to.
There should be more suchntalks and more discussive environments
to enable the deaf ask more questions and learn more.
