Disability
is not Inability |
::Deaf leader addicted to internet at the World Bank
facility….
Internet access for persons with disabilities is lacking in many
countries. The internet is a source of much information and education
on almost anything. As much as such unlimited potential many PWDs
especially in the developing countries do not have access to the
digital world. The digital divide is huge in relation to most
developing communities let alone PWDs. Persons with disabilities
do not even have access to basic social services we take for grunted
available in the developing economies.
It is within this background that when I met a friend Boniface
Inyanya he explained to me that he has been lost because he has
been spending time doing fundraising on the internet. As the chairman
of a deaf organization he has to fundraise. The cheapest way to
fundraise is the internet. He is learning how to write proposals,
he is learning how to make budgets. He got contacts for many organizations
in the world from the internet. Through the internet he is free.
He is truly free. He can write to anybody in any organization
in the world and seek funding.
I may not have succeeded so far but thank God for the internet.
All I need to do is to go to a place where I can have access.
I thank World Bank for this facility. Many deaf people have challenge
with reading and writing English. It is unfortunate. As the chairman
of Kenya National deaf Aids education programme (KNDAEP) working
with the computer has taught me a lot. I learn many things by
this. I encourage more deaf people to learn hwo to read and write
English so they can also write emails and help develop our community.
I also encourage the government to provide more services that
are accessible to the disabled people. It is encouraging what
the World Bank is doing. It is encouraging that I can see other
blind people here at the world.
The internet has made me to be able to apply for funds to organization
like the Bill Gates foundation, the World Bank and many big organizations
that many disabled people do not have access. I was surprised
by this application through contacts I got in the internet; I
got a reply from the Bill gates Foundation. Though it was a regret
letter it was encouraging that me a deaf person in Kenya could
communicate with any person anywhere in the world through email.
