:: Deaf Women and HIV/AIDS in Africa Conference:

An African conference dated for June 2007 in South Africa will bring together those with expertise in deafness and HIV/AIDs who share a passion for justice and Change.

Women face the highest risk in relation to HIV/AIDs.
Prevalence rate among women in many statistics including Kenya is much higher than those of men. Women with disabilities have the double tragedy of the fact that they are women and living with disabilities. One in three women with disabilities are not in a steady sexual relationship yet have had several sexual relations without power to negotiate protection. They have few access to reproductive information or services even within the programmes targeting HIV/AIDS management.

The conference Sponsored by the Gallaudet University through a series of presentations, roundtable discussions and exhibits, partcipants will heighten awareness of the plight of Deaf women with HIV/AIDs in Africa and acquire the information tools and networking necessary to return to African nations to bring about change.

The 3 days Conference slated to open doors on 21st June will be held at the ESKOM Convention Centre and attracts about USD 100 or about Kshs 7,000 registration is expected to be quite an eyeopener for deaf women in relation to HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Themes of the Conference include:

1. Conditions of Deaf Women with HIV/AIDS in Africa.

2. Current policies (local, and national; governmental and non-governmental; community and faith-based institutions) towards Deaf Women with HIV/AIDS in Africa.

3. Effective ways to reach and communicate with Deaf women with HIV/AIDS in Africa.

4. African deaf organisations and policies/programs towards Deaf women with HIV/AIDS.

5 . Future suggestions for relating to Deaf women with HIV/AIDS in Africa.

6. Current trends of and future suggestions for research at Universities in Africa and the United States in relation to Deaf women and HIV/AIDs in Africa.
