:: Do deal firmly with the in-laws

Mother-in-law particularly like to interfere with their sons’ marriage because they don’t like losing them to another woman. And unless the son is firm, his mother can make his married life miserable.

Kathy is currently counseling a couple facing problems with their in-laws. The wife is fed up and ready to walk out. She says she did not marry her mother-in-law, who has apparently taken over her marriage. It is so bad that the older woman even says what schools her grandchildren should attend!

“If the husband doesn’t take a stand, then that marriage is lost. My mother and I are very close but when I got married, I told her that I have another woman in my life now and if she wanted anything from me she had to go through Kathy,” says Allan.

And when the couple faced financial difficulties a while ago, Kathy was firm with her close-knit family who wanted to help. She asked them to leave her alone to sort out her issues.

“I told them Allan was mine and together we would overcome our problems. I am happy they respected our wish.”
