Definitions:
The Persons with disability ACT 2004 defines disability as:
“disability”
means a physical, sensory, mental or other impairments, including
any visual, hearing, learning or physical incapability, which
impacts adversely on social, economic or environmental participation;
This definition therefore is confusing
because it embraces all the models of disability are is not easy
to know the spirit of the ACT prefers. The Social
Model and the
Medical Model and the Charity
Model are more of the basis from which disability
is define.
Infact many documentation by the National Council for Persons
with Disabilities, the intergrated version initiated by the World
Health Organisation is mostly embraced. This defines
disability as an integration of both the medical and social models.
The WHO Model also
works well within the capability
approaches defined to measure standards of capability.
John Morris working on cultural
portralys in the media came up with the metaphor model. This is
interesting when looking at how the media portrays disability
and its impact on our reaction to disability.
