Disability
is not Inability |
:: Media engaging the disability community…
One of the greatest pillars of a democracy is that the majority
rule and the minority are protected. With this in mind, we realize
that there is much ground to cover in relation to empowerment
of persons with disabilities in a country like Kenya, but Media
Council of Kenya just like the Government should engage the community
within equal international civil rights laws and conventions.
Such would require that the MCK lead by example
and not only build its capacity to effectively include the disability
community, but also retrain its journalists on disability perspectives,
encourage participation of journalists with disabilities, build
consultation networks with of organizations of persons with disabilities,
adjust its structures to become disability friendly and finally
effectively mainstream the community as equal citizens. If this
can be done within self regulation of the media, then the media
must not only do it, but also be seen to do it.
