The NED seeks to strengthen democratic organisations around the world, through the support of projects to promote political and economic freedom, a strong civil society, independent media, human rights and the rule of law.

Their 2002 Guide to Sources of Funding in International Democratic Development offers links to more than 100 foundations and other funding organisations. The guide was last updated in mid-2001.
