:: First Lady Wa vitendo in support of Disability
in Kenya:
The most visiable landmark of the Kibaki administration
was the role of the exuburant First Lady Mama Lucy Kibaki. The
role of the first lady has for a long been diminuted by cultures
and attitudes to women especially in Africa. This remained the
case for many years added by the fact that many of us grew up
with a fatherly president who was more of a single father. For
almost a quater of a century Kenyans did not experience the warmth
of a motherly first lady.
Until 2003 when we Kenyan saw the first pro-active first lady
in national politics with a executive programme independent of
that of the President. The value of the family as the basic unit
of life was redifined more than ever.
But one of the major programmes that First lady in the Kibaki
Administration championed most was the need to build a disability-friendly
Kenya.
