:: THE KENYA AIRWAYS PLANE CRASH:
 |
|
The energetic director is said
to have been coming from a strategic meeting in Ivory Coast. Newspaper
reports say the plane made a stopover at the Douala International
Airport on its fateful way to Nairobi from Abidjan the capital
city of Ivory coast where daktari had was attending crucial regional
meetings. Reports indicate it crashed a few metres from the end
of the Douala Airport runway but over 20 kilometeres from the
city of Douala Cameroon.
Dr. Henn is said to have fitted well into the large
shoes of the former Liverpool Director Dr. Miriam who was a key
pillar behind the establishment of the Deaf VCT programme and
is said to still have a flame for the projects. The deaf progarmme
has many lessons in inclusion of the disability community both
at the organisational level and within provision of social services
to the vulnerable groups in developing countries.
That week of May 2007 was filled with much anxiety especially
after the uncofirmed reports of the missing plane. It took too
long to find the plane and confirm anything about the missing
plane. There was much anxiety not only to the family, friends
and Liverpool staff but also to the country as a whole when it
was found that though not yet confirmed Dr.
Henn was in the KQ manifest.

Many theories are currently doing
rounds about what actually happened. It only adds pains and
anguish to those who wished to know what happened to their
loved ones... |
|
But one thing that is coming out clearly is the
safety standards that manage the flights from the western region.
Various experts including retired pilots who have flown the areas
have been quoted in the press saying there are many issues to
be desired in relation to the area.
Was the crash caused by bad weather? why wasnt there support from
airport control systems? why did it took soo long to find the
debris while the plane crashed a few meters for the runway....
these are the questions in many mionds as we mourn our beloved
...
The deaf would never walk alone...
The deaf community and the Disability community in general joins
the Staff, clients, partners and family of Dr. Albert Henn in
this time of grief. Surely we all owned him and will miss him.
But the disability community will miss him most for hardly do
we find leaders in mainstraem organisations who champion
for the inclusion and integration of the disabled community
with such strong convictions and humility.
We had much expectations that when he had finished his course
in sign language he would lead the Deaf VCT programme to greater
heights within not only the organisation's core areas of VCT,
Care and treatment but also use the policy influence to pursue
inroads in building disability-friendly services in the greater
health system.
REST IN PEACE, SIR!
