::Kenya Programmes of Disabled Persons (KPDP)
Background
Kenya Programmes of Disabled Persons (KPDP) was established in
the year 1998 by Persons With Disabilities (PWD’s) in Kenya
following a serious outcry by Persons With Disabilities for a
strong Organization that voice and represent and articulate their
needs. KPDP received its legal status in the year 1999 when it
was duly registered as a National Non-Profit Non Governmental
Organization to specifically address issues, concerns, needs and
social-economic welfare of all Disabled Persons in Kenya.
Kenya Programmes of Disabled Persons (KPDP) is both an advocacy
and a service provider organization which is sensitizing Persons
With Disabilities and the society at large on the rights of Persons
With Disabilities and which is also advocating for appropriate
legislation for Persons With Disabilities in Kenya.
Kenya Programmes of Disabled Persons has a Board of Directors
in place that are mainly Persons With Disabilities who formulate
the organization’s policies and guidelines for the day-to-day
operations.
Kenya Programmes of Disabled Persons is a very unique organization
in that it is the only current National Organization in Kenya
that is carrying out advocacy programs as well as serving Persons
With Disabilities in various ways. Kenya Programmes of Disabled
Persons is also the only National Organization that is addressing
issues of physically challenged, mentally handicapped, visually
impaired, hearing and speech impaired among others.
