:: KENYA INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION (KIE).
:: Background
Kenya Institute Education was established in 1986
through a legal Notice No. 17 of 14th February 1986 by the Government
of Kenya with the assistance of the Danish Development Agency
(DANIDA). The institute is run by a council appointed by the Minister
for Education. The Head of the Council is the Director who is
also the secretary of the Council.
:: Core Functions
o To conduct training of teachers and other personnel in the field
of Special Needs Education.
o To conduct in-services for personnel working in all fields of
special Needs Education.
o To run an Educational and Psychological Assessment Centre for
training of teachers and other personnel for early intervention,
placement and rehabilitation of children with special needs.
o To run a regular model school for the inclusion and stimulation
of children with special needs for purposes of teachers’
training.
o To function as a National Resource Centre for collection, production,
documentation and dissemination of information on Special Needs
to the general public.
o To conduct research in Special Needs and disseminate information
to general public.
o To design, produce and maintain educational resources and assistive
devices for persons with special needs and their caregivers.
Training Programmes
KISE runs how to programmes namely; Full-time (residential programme),
and distance learning programme. Recruitment to both programmes
is done annually. The programmes are tailored to give a wholistic
education that prepares learns for life-long learning and success
in their profession and enhance the institute’s role as
a pace setter in special needs education in the country.
All courses aim at giving quality training in
appropriate and relevant competencies to enable the graduates
to serve in schools, units, communities and organizations for
or of persons with special needs, among others.
All the programmes are under the Academic Registrar
who is assisted by academic Heads of Department.
All the courses are skills oriented and highly
practical and prepare the graduands to work as:
o Teachers of Special Needs Education
o Educational Assessment Personnel
o Itinerant Teachers
o Consultants in Special Needs Education
:: Full time (Residential Programme)
The programme offers a 2 year Diploma course and a 1 year Certificate
course in special needs education. Both courses cover areas of
speciality. These are:
o Education of persons with Hearing Impairment
o Educations of persons with Visual Impairment
o Education of persons with Physical disabilities
o Education of persons who are Mentally Handicapped
o Education of Persons who are Deafblind
o Education of persons with Autism
Other courses to be started soon include:
o Education of persons with Communication Disorder.
o Education of persons who are Gifted and Talented.
o Early Childhood Care, Development and Education
Mode of Delivery
These courses are conducted through lectures, tutorials and field
visits. Assessment is based on essays, term papers, written examinations,
special projects and special study papers together with practical
attachment.
Certificate Courses
This is a one year school based course for the teachers practicing
in special schools, special units and integrated programmes for
children with special needs. Tutorial Sessions are held every
school holiday (April, August and December).
Candidates must be;
o Practicing teachers serving in special schools, units and integrated
programmes.
Diploma Course
Candidate must be;
o Practicing teachers with a minimum of P1 Certificate or its
equivalent and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)
Grade “C” and above or its equivalent with at least
5 years experience.
o Applicants who are blind or deaf with a minimum
of P1 Certificate or its equivalent and Kenya Certificate of Secondary
Education (KCSE) grade “C-” (Minus) or its equivalent
with at least five years experience are also eligible.
o Duration: Two Years.
