Disability is not Inability

:: Lawrence Mule on KTN Prime news on disability day
3rd December 2006.

Lawrence is a Commissioner of Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC).

Blind and a professional lawyer who uses IT at all times from the time he was in school

Extra resources in assisting education in schools.

Extra money for the PWDs in assisting free education.

ICT may not work since most are still poor and in the rural areas.

Access may be a big issue.

Many may not yet see the benefit

Policy is very good but the devil is in the details of implementation.

While Mr. Mute was able to go through university education by the blessings of ICT there are opportunities for the PWDs in primary to have access to instruction materials through ICT.

The challenge is enlarging access both in urban and rural settings. Schools churches and community based organizations must be supplied with disability-friendly computers systems and training.

Books may not talk but books inside computers may talk to the blind, can be translated into sign for the blind and can assist even children with physical disabilities.

This is the only way we can have more PWDs represented in the higher echelons of life like Mr. Mute.
