Disability is not Inability

:: My life a deaf girl in school.
10th October 1997 (article in edited deaf english).

My name is Anita. I was born deaf. Me tell story mine time young. I don’t know what happened to make me born deaf. When My parent said they collect me from hospital. Doctor said me deaf. She said she shock and ask deaf mean what? When me grow up me worry much because me think me only deaf in the world. I think I am only deaf lady whole world.

Later my parents told me they hear that have school for deaf children. That time, I don’t like going school. They force me. They take me Agha Khan and I cry because my parents go away. They leave me school. First I hard me share with other people in school. Two days later me feel happy. There are other deaf people. I get a new friend and we play together. First hard communication because don’t know. Problem communication high because I don’t know sign language.

Time I stay at home my parent talk using oral. Me hard understand. then slowly me improve sign language. Many times I don’t have friend s at home. I stay house. Many time me help mother work house. Me go school morning and come house evening. Many time teacher say me do things.

Our teacher know sign language and teach us many things. First me hard communicate sign. But slowly learn. Teacher teach me many sign. Our school same have hearing children. Many time hearing children don’t know how to friend with deaf children. Then sometime they refuse friends. Then teacher warn them. Many time warn them to friend with deaf children. Then teacher make us sit together. Slowly friends.

Me tell story so that other teacher care deaf children well. Me have brother who deaf. Again have other small brother who hearing. He very young. Me have sister three who hearing. And love my family very much.

At school our learn karate and me very good. Many time me win beat other children including boys. Another time one deaf boy me hit with pen until blood. Then teacher beat me. Boy look me long time. Me don’t know why. Then teacher beat me very much and me don’t like people who look me and say nothing.

Now me hope more deaf girls in school get good education. Me hope they read well. I tell lie good nothing. Me hope there school teacher care them well. Then they grow up and learn many things same hearing people. Time me young me like tuition nothing. Many time me run away then cheat teacher me sick. Then later teacher call mother mine. Teacher find me lie. Beat me very hard.
