4. YOU CAN STILL LIVE A NORMAL LIFE IF YOU ARE HIV POSITIVE
If a person is infected with HIV it does not mean that they will
develop AIDS immediately. An HIV positive person can feel quite
well for several years and may have no visible symptoms of illness.
This period of being healthy is called the period of no symptom.
It is a period during which people should be encouraged to live
positively, through the way they take care of themselves, with
the support of all their family, friends and the health care system.
Many factors can determine the length of the period with no symptoms.
These include the person’s lifestyle, diet and their body’s
ability to fight other infections. If people with HIV look after
themselves and are well looked after by their family and friends,
AIDS may not develop for 5-10 years or more.
