5. PARTNERS AND FAMILIES OF PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV AND AIDS CAN
FEEL SAFE
Partners and families of people living with HIV should not be
afraid. HIV can only be transmitted in a few specific ways, through
activities which allow the exchange of body fluids such as semen,
vaginal liquids, blood or breast milk. These include transmission
through unprotected sex-that is sex without a condom – either
male to female, or male to male. Unprotected anal sex is particularly
risky behaviour. Mother to child transmission of the virus can
also occur through breast feeding.
The virus cannot be passed on to a family member by shaking hands,
hugging, kissing, using the same bathroom, eating from the same
dishes, coughing, or mosquito bites. The care and support provided
by family and friends is extremely important in keeping loved
ones alive and preventing anyone else from getting infected. If
a person becomes sick with AIDS they should be given the same
love, respect and care as any other person in the community suffering
from a serious illness.
